Web 2.0 Curriculum

Duration: 20 hours

Objective:
This training curriculum is intended to help students to be able to do various types of collaborative writing and understand the wider world of computing that is the Internet and how it effects their education and personality, their friends and society. By mean of collaborative writing, students have to work in group to do class assignment and class project so they have to write or rewrite the content from one year to another year. If they use online collaborative tools this will benefit themselves and community by getting input from their community, their teachers can also check reference collection and notes to be sure they're on the right track and provide guidance on their draft, their peer group can revise what one have done and leave comments. When the next generation come they can also see what the first generation or other have done and add their contributions to something larger than what would otherwise be an isolated, one semester experience. Also, using collaborative tools, they can discuss what they don't understand and share their idea and experience to their community. Collaborative tools can also teach students to be perspective by letting  them look the outside world of their country and develop their idea with the new concept. In addition, It's not a boring subject, it provides student to be active, to have real practice, to have purpose, to interact, and to have fun.

After finishing this course students are able to:

  • Demonstrate the basic understanding of the important of collaborative work
  • Communicate with your friends using Chat and IM
  • Create a personal website about yourself to the world
  • Help to create on line resource as a library
  • Discuss topics you enjoy
  • Receive latest information from your favorite web site.
  • Share your photos or images to your friends or your relatives.
  • Manipulate your images and graphics to create fun images and post to your blog
  • Catalog your favorite book on-line and share with your friends
  • On line bookmark your favorite web site
  • Share your favorite web site to the world


Prerequisite:
Students are required to be able to use computer components such as Mouse, Keyboard. They have to be familiar with using browser and using the link of a web site.

Lab Requirement:

This curriculum is best for lab room that has Internet connection. For the room that has no Internet connection, the teacher have to setup Intranet web 2.0 tool as following:

A local web server that has the necessary of web 2.0 tools

  • Chat protocol
  • Blog site
  • Wiki site
  • Forum site
  • RSS module


Outline:

The following outline is divided into two sections, one is for a Lab that has no Internet connection, namely Intranet, and the other requires Internet connection Lab. But the lab room that has Internet connection can be best applied the whole curriculum.


Intranet


Section 1: Understand the new modern technology

  • Understand the new modern technology
  • Explore various existing blogs
  • Discover a few pointers from lifelong learnersand learn how to nurture your own learning process.


Section 2: Chatting

  • Understand about chatting
  • Configuring your account with chat program
  • One-to-one chatting and group chatting
  • Alternative chatting protocol

Tool to be used:

  • With the lab that has Internet connection we can use any protocol like yahoo, gmail, IRC...
  • With the lab that has no Internet connection we are testing on Tikiwiki that has chat feature to be setup as chat server.


Section 2: Blogging

  • Set up your own blog, add your first post
  • Register your blog

Tool to be used:

  • With the lab that has Internet connection we can use blog server like wordpress, blogsome, blogspot...(Recommond wordpress because it is already in Khmer language.
  • With the lab that has no Internet connection we can also setup Wordpress as blog server in Local Area Network.


Section 3: Wikis

  • Introduction about Wiki
  • Discover some innovative waysthat libraries are using them.
  • Add an entry to the wiki.

Tool to be used:

  • We can learn from existing online tutorial about web 2.0 in the Internet connection lab.
  • The lab that has no Internet connection we are testing different kind of wiki like Mediawiki, Tikiwiki, Dukowiki...


Section 4: Forum

  • Understand about forum
  • How to use forum
  • Posting discussion

Tool to be used:
We are doing research on it (Recommend: Drupal,...)


Section 5: RSS & Newsreaders

  • Understand about RSS feeds
  • Set up your own Bloglines newsreader account.
  • Locate a few useful library related blogs and/or news feeds.

Software to be used:
Akregator, KDE applications, for getting the updated page of web site.

Section 6: Photos & Images

  • Explore Flickrand learn about this popular image hosting site.
  • Have some Flickr fun and discover some Flickr mashups & 3rd party sites.
  • Create a blog post about anything technology relatedthat interests you this week.

Section 7: Social Networking

  • Facebook
  • LinkedIn
  • Myspace
  • 43 Things, place and people

Section 8: Online Applications & Tools

  • Take a look at some online productivity (word processing, spreadsheet) tools.
  • Take a look at LibraryThing and catalog some of your favorite books.

Section 9: Search Engines, Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati

  • Learn about tagging and discover Del.icio.us(a social bookmarking site)
  • Explore Technorati and learn how tagswork with blog posts.
  • Read a few perspectives on Web 2.0, Library 2.0 and the future of librariesand blog your thoughts.

Section 10: Podcasts, Video & Downloadable Audio

  • Discover YouTube and a few sitesthat allow users to upload and share videos.
  • Podcasts
  • eBooks and Audio eBooks

Section 11: Play Week

  • Play around with an online image generator.
  • Searching various fun tools on video, music, game.
  • Explore any site from the Web 2.0 awards list, play with it and write a blog post about your findings.
  • Roll your own search tool with Rollyo.
